Volunteer Opportunities

*As of April 1, 2020 new onsite volunteers are not being accepted into the volunteer program and orientations have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  We ARE still accepting new foster volunteers.  If you are interested in fostering please send your contact information to stephanie@oahs.org  We will post any changes and updates here on our website.

We are following suggested precautionary measures to prevent possible exposure and spread of the COVID-19 virus (coronavirus). Our top priority is the health and safety of our volunteers, staff and guests.  Please check back for any future updates on volunteer scheduling changes.

There's a variety of volunteer opportunities for OAHS including:

Canine Partners: Guaranteed to keep you and the dogs heart health and happy! Every dog deserves some one-on-one time with a nice person like you. Dog walkers can take dogs out for a daily walk, enjoy playtime in one of our outside runs or just spend some nice quiet time with a dog while reading to them. Dog behavior and handling training is required.

Feline Friends: A sure fire way to put a smile on your face and reduce your stress level. Spend some time playing, brushing or relaxing with some of our felines looking for companionship. Cat behavior and handling training is required.

Foster Care:  When an animal arrives at OAHS who is not ready for adoption due to such factors as being too young, recovering from an illness or injury, or simply not doing well in a shelter setting, OAHS relies on foster volunteers to provide a safe place for the animal until they are ready for adoption. For more information click here

Maintenance/Grounds: OAHS has over 2 acres of grounds to maintain. There is always something that needs to be done – gardening, minor building repairs, painting, cleaning, etc. Your “handy” skills are always needed somewhere at OAHS.

Laundry: OAHS does on average 40 loads of laundry a day. If you enjoy the pleasure of washing, drying and putting away fresh laundry, then this is just the job for you. If you would like to volunteer as a Canine Partner or Feline Friend, laundry fits in well. Let us know if you have a friend that likes to clean windows!

Pet Therapy
This is your chance to bring a bit of joy and happiness into the lives of those in local nursing homes. You may take your dog, cat or other animal to a nursing home for regularly scheduled visitations. An evaluation of your animal is required.

Special Events, Outreach Events, Supply Drives
OAHS is involved with many local events. We are looking for friendly-outgoing-customer service oriented people to staff information booths, answer questions about the shelter; help out at Walk for the Animals and other fundraisers. If you like interacting with the public, this might just be the perfect fit for you.

Canister Banks
OAHS depends on the generosity of others. Help maintain a donation bank at a local business. Maybe you can have one at your place of employment. Ask a local business to place a canister bank in their store and collect the donations from the bank once a month.
